A person living with HIV or AIDS has a weakened immune system. Because of this compromised ability to fight off infection, they become vulnerable to certain infections and conditions, such as gum disease, also called gingivitis, or they are highly susceptible to colds and the flu.
Two conditions are common to individuals with HIV or AIDS: Kaposi's sarcoma, which is a type of cancer found in skin tissues that causes bluish-red spots on the skin, and oral candidiasis, which is a yeast infection also known as thrush.
Those with HIV and AIDS are also at risk of becoming anemic. Anemia is when the amount of hemoglobin (the iron-containing molecule in red blood cells) dips too low - making a person feel fatigued and out of breath.
If you have HIV and AIDS, speak with your doctor about what you can do to prevent complications due to your weakened immune system.
